Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union Marks 50 Years of Advocacy, Empowerment, and Community

Waterloo, ON – April 16, 2025— The Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union is proud to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025, recognizing five decades of advocacy, service, and community for undergraduate students on Laurier campuses.

Since its incorporation in 1975, the Students’ Union has remained committed to enhancing the student experience by championing accessibility, affordability, and academic excellence. As it reaches this major milestone, the Union reflects on a legacy built around three core pillars: advocacy for a high-quality and financially accessible education, the creation of safe and empowering spaces, and the promotion of diverse, inclusive social interaction.

“For 50 years the Students’ Union has been a strong voice for our students both at the university and in the broader community, consistently working to ensure student voices are represented in decision making.” said Ben Jesseau, President & CEO of the Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union. “This anniversary is a chance for us to reflect on the important work we have done on behalf of students, alongside our partners on campus and beyond, in addition to thinking about the opportunities that are ahead of us.”

Through essential services, campus programming, and the ever-growing campus club’s system, the Union has consistently developed and provided opportunities and resources designed with students' holistic well-being in mind. The Union also works closely with university administration, and advocates to municipal, provincial, and federal governments for financial accessibility, enhanced campus support services, and student-centered decision-making.

In celebration of its 50th year, the Students’ Union will be hosting a series of events throughout 2025, including a 50th Anniversary Gala, alumni reunions, open houses, and a storytelling campaign capturing the voices of students past and present. Community members are encouraged to share their own memories on social media using the hashtag #YourSU50.
