The Golden Hawks Welcome Keynote Speaker Sam Demma for Orientation Volunteer Training

WLU Students' Union welcomed best-selling author and sought-after keynote speaker Sam Demma for two powerful speaking events. Sam, known for his unique ability to blend humour with powerful messages on Empathy, Mental Health, and Leadership, has become a favourite among educational audiences. With over 600 performances under his belt, collaborations with major brands like Taco Bell, and features on national news shows, Sam’s presentations are more than just speeches—they're performances that entertain, inspire, and leave a lasting impact.

At Laurier, Sam performed twice for 60 minutes, captivating a packed room of eager volunteers with his energy and storytelling. He emphasized the importance of empathy, curiosity, and leading by example, encouraging volunteers to assist first-year students with the challenges and opportunities of university life.

After hearing the Waterloo campus performance, sixty-four students grabbed a copy of Sam’s book Empty Your Backpack. While signing books, one student said, “I had to pee so bad for an hour, but I was so into the talk and what Sam was saying that I stayed seated and listened until the end."

Two days later, at the Brantford campus, Sam continued to inspire with stories highlighting the profound impact a single gesture of kindness can have on someone’s experience. His approach was motivational and practical, offering students clear strategies to maximize their volunteer roles and ensure every new student feels connected and confident. One highlight was Sam’s comical and signature rizz walk, which students have not stopped doing across campus.

Wilfrid Laurier University is known for its strong sense of community, and these speaking events reinforced the critical role each student plays in maintaining that culture. Sam’s sessions were a call to action, reminding volunteers that they have the power to make a significant difference in the lives of newcomers.

As Wilfrid Laurier University continues to grow and evolve, the dedication of these volunteers, guided by Sam’s insights, will help ensure that every new student feels welcomed and supported from the moment they step on campus.
