A Statement From The Students' Union

Updated: Feb 21, 2023

RE: Non-Halal Grilled Chicken at Wilf’s Restaurant and the Turret The Students’ Union unreservedly apologizes to the Muslim community and all those impacted for the egregious error and harm caused by the likely serving of non-Halal grilled chicken as Halal in Wilf’s Restaurant and the Turret. We have taken deliberate steps to deliver accountability for that decision-making and have rectified our supply issue.

This apology comes with the recognition that a mistake of this nature involves a serious breach of trust. We are committed to offering a menu that respects faith-based traditions and accounts for a variety of dietary restrictions. We understand that in order for the Students’ Union to do this successfully the campus community must be able to trust the integrity of our process. We are committed to regaining your trust.

The Students’ Union has commenced an immediate review of our food service and preparation procedures and will share an update before we resume advertising Halal items. We have confirmed that the inventory we receive comes with a seal from the Halal Monitoring Authority and each product has a Halal certification.

Moving forward we will be developing a separate Halal menu for Wilf’s that provides detailed information about our suppliers and our kitchen preparation procedures. The Students’ Union will also be pursuing additional training for our hospitality teams around the preparation and serving of food that adheres to faith-based traditions. We are working with the Muslim Students’ Association and the voice of appropriate representation within the Students’ Union. We will also be engaging with Laurier’s Muslim Chaplain in order to be directly responsive to concerns from the campus community and ensure the steps we take to rebuild trust are regenerative.

We encourage community members who have been impacted by this incident to be in touch with the Muslim Students’ Association, Laurier’s Centre for Student Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and the Muslim Chaplain.
