Get to know your city: Waterloo

Waterloo is an exciting city filled with culture, food, events and activities waiting to be discovered. With Orientation Week fast approaching, we’ve called in our experts — the students — to give you the rundown of all of the exciting things that you can try out and visit this fall.

Conveniently located right in the centre of campus, Wilf’s has a place in the hearts of all Golden Hawks. Try out some popular menu picks, such as the Spin Dip, Seagram and The Hawker. There are daily events too, head to Wilf’s on Mondays for Open Mic night, Tuesdays for Bingo with Twan, and Wednesdays for Trivia Night.

Did you know? There has been a longstanding debate between Golden Hawks when it comes to pita or chips with their Spin Dip. Which is better? You’ll have to decide.

Animals at Waterloo Park

Although it might seem we’re outnumbered by the geese, there are other animals in Waterloo! Check out Waterloo Park, it’s a popular destination for students during the year. Known as the jewel of the city, Waterloo Park has a lake, animal farm, picnic areas, splashpad, sport fields, playgrounds and more!

Did you know? Waterloo Park showcases free movies during the summer months and houses over 100 light displays across the park in the winter.

Taco Tuesdays at Ethel’s Lounge

Did somebody say tacos? It’s a (delicious) tradition among Golden Hawks to grab tacos on Tuesday at Ethel’s Lounge for just $3. Dinner is served, taco-bout awesome!

St. Jacob’s Farmers Market

You’re not limited to getting your groceries at Wal-Mart in Waterloo. Every Saturday, this farmers market holds over 300 vendors, nearby fashion and homeware outlet shopping, antiques and a quality flea market – there’s something here for everyone.

Catch a flick at Princess Cinemas

Whether you call them movies or films, this is the place to see some motion pictures. As an independent art house cinema, Princess Cinemas has two locations – Princess Original (behind the Huether Hotel) and Princess Twin – which show Oscar-worthy indy films and live performances. Bring your One-Card to get a student discount.

President’s Recommendation, Morty’s Pub

Are you a fan of chicken wings? For three decades, Morty’s has been a classic pub spot for Laurier students. This pub will feel like home, from the smell of delicious homemade pub food. Be sure to visit on a Monday or Thursday night for Wing Nite specials!

Did you know? Morty’s has served tens of millions of chicken wings since it opened its doors in 1981. It also used to be located at the corner of King and University.

Take the time to get to know the city, this is your new home for the next couple of years and there are many exciting things happening both on and off-campus. Also, be sure to check out the website to keep up to date with events!

Not sure how to get there? Your Dons and Icebreakers will help you out, we’ve also included the maps for you. Don’t forget that your Laurier One Card can be used as a bus pass on the GRT! Or if you’re lazy like me, you can always just take a Lime.

Welcome to Waterloo. Have fun exploring your new city, Golden Hawks.
