Welcome to Laurier, and congratulations on accepting your offer!
I know that things are a little different than imagined this year, but Laurier and its incredible community are here to help alleviate some of the “first-year jitters.” Students’ Union staff, volunteers and partners have planned this week in anticipation of your arrival. Their goal and my own is to help you thrive during your time at Laurier and onwards. This week’s programming will be filled with events, sessions and experiences that will help you meet new people, discover new opportunities, more information about your academics, and much more!
In addition to Laurier being an excellent institution for post-secondary studies, we pride ourselves on fostering an inclusive and caring community. The Students’ Union is, in its very essence: a union of the students. We represent, create opportunities, and advocate for the Waterloo and Brantford campuses’ undergraduates. You become a member of the Students’ Union as soon as you register at Laurier! Most employees and volunteers of the Students’ Union are themselves, students. Should you wish to get involved on campus (which I suggest you do!), hundreds of volunteer, club, and employment opportunities are available!
Meeting new people and being in a new environment with new demands made me feel anxious going into my first day at Laurier. The months leading up to my first year were filled with excitement and dread. I now know that I was not alone; this feeling carries with students probably more now than ever before, having lived through a pandemic. I cannot imagine how it must feel, and I sympathize. Nevertheless, online classes have taught me how great it is to be a Laurier student and how lucky I am to be here.
I started my co-curricular career in my first year through residence programming. In the following years, I got involved in other university areas. I recognize that through these experiences, I have met some of my best friends and shaped my future career. I would not be where I am today had it not been for the great experiences and opportunities that Laurier and the Students’ Union have to offer, and I hope that whoever reads this gets involved! Our experiences at Laurier might differ, but the sentiment remains the same: Laurier is a great place to learn, build community and get involved.
