Letter from the President: Turret Project

For Immediate Release

To undergraduate students of Wilfrid Laurier University,

It is with great excitement that the Students’ Union announces the next steps of the Turret project. With assistance of the Student Life Levy, the University and the work of numerous partners, the Turret will be undergoing significant renovations this coming summer.

The goal for the past many years has been to give the space back to students for more consistent use. We will be creating a unique, user friendly space that will combine the social space of Wilf’s, the lower concourse and the academic work space of the 2-4 lounge.

Our goal is that the complete transformation of the Turret will encourage more comprehensive usage by creating a location functional as both a social venue, and an independent or group study space. Accessible to students throughout the day, we will be adding approximately 260 study spaces to the current venue, including approximately 75 group study spots.

With a total project cost of $2.2 million funded by the Student Life Levy, the Turret will be redesigned for student use. Preliminary renderings of how the space will look are at the bottom of this letter.*

The Students’ Union is in the concluding stages of the planning process. Our goal is that Phase 3, which includes construction will begin May 1st, 2018.

Due to the upcoming renovations, the space will not be available for bookings starting in the last week of April, through to the beginning of Fall. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but we firmly believe that the end result will be better for all groups and especially students moving forward.

The Turret project is expected to be completed in Fall 2018 and ready for student use.
