Tomorrow marks a national holiday; however, at the Students’ Union, we are encouraging our students to be aware of Canada’s colonial legacies. The devastating ongoing process of locating unmarked graves at the sites of former residential schools serves as a stark reminder of the injustices present throughout the history of this land. This year, we encourage everyone on July 1st to:

  1. Wear orange to honour the lives lost and in solidarity with the Indigenous community.
  2. Donate to groups such as the Orange Shirt Society, the Save the Evidence Campaign, or other programs supporting Indigenous communities.

This year the Students’ Union is continuing to educate ourselves about the damage and trauma inflicted by settlers on Indigenous communities, the roles we as individuals have played, and the means we have to push reconciliation forward. We encourage everyone to do the same.
